History of vibrator
Sex toys are not something new and unusual for modern people. But how they appeared? Who invented them?
There are plenty of sex toys that make intimate relationships exciting and spicy. Their number is quite great; therefore it is almost impossible to represent to the reader their complete history in an article. In this article we are going to speak about history of one of the most popular kind of sex toys - vibrator.
First artificial penises appeared in Ancient Egypt as far back as 2500 years ago. They were hacked out of stones, shaped out of pitch and cut out of wood. Artificial penises also were made of various improvised materials that could be put into the shape of not unknown male organ. As legend has it, the idea of vibrator first came to mind of miller wives who used to sit down on vibrating handles of flour mills.
First vibrators were invented in the Victorian epoch. In the 18th century a device that worked on principle of watch movement was invented. This prototype of modern sex toy was used for treating hysteria that was one of the most frequent health complaints among women of the day. This vibrator was quite difficult to use and required "winding". In 1869 American doctor John Tailor took out a patent for stationary "manipulator" powered by steam engine. Since this device appeared, there was no necessity to "wind" it. Instead of this, users had to throw coal into the "firepot». The exotic procedure was quite expensive; therefore the device was used only in therapeutic clinics and hospitals.
After a few years, in 1883 the first electromechanical portable vibrator was invented. However two big accumulators were not always enough to make a patient orgasm. Six years passed and improved devices which operated on batteries began working up the market. New vibrator was advertised widely by women's knitting and needlework magazines in the beginning of the 20th century.
Doctors had to reconcile themselves to the fact that vibrators became a "home remedy" and could be found on the bedside tables. Ingenuous husbands believed their wives used these devices to get rid of hysteria. At that time nobody thought that women could enjoy sex.
In 1920 doctors rejected treating hysteria with vibrators and began using psychotherapeutic methods for this purpose. Nevertheless, vibrators were considered a panacea that could help to get rid of all diseases, including headache and tuberculosis. Some firms and enterprises produced vibrators with additional parts which made it possible to use the vibrator as a mixer or sewing machine.
Today a few ancient vibrators are kept in Smithsonian museum (Washington). Collectors find these sex toys on flea markets. The most interesting thing is that sellers suppose they sell their grandmother's device for arthritis treatment or for polishing the floor.
